Port Alberni, BC – To assist local businesses in finding innovative and creative ways of servicing the community, the City has established a set of guidelines that will allow approved businesses to expand their operations onto sidewalk areas and other City-owned properties.

The City of Port Alberni has received a $21,950 grant to support the development of an Uptown District Revitalization Strategy (UDRS).

The grant funds, provided by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) and Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, will further a number of the City’s strategic priorities and goals as outlined in the 2019 – 2023 Corporate Strategic Plan. One such priority is for the City to respond to demographic change in the community and improve quality of life, specifically by revitalizing the Uptown District.

Port Alberni, BC – The City of Port Alberni is pleased to announce the hiring of Ms. Wendy Murphy as Manager of Police Support Services.

Tseshaht First Nation and the City of Port Alberni have issued a joint statement in response to an incident report in the early hours of June 2, 2020, on the Tseshaht First Nation Reserve:

“This morning, we learned of what appears to be a shocking racially-fueled incident that targeted local First Nations on the Tseshaht Reserve. The incident was reported to local R.C.M.P, who are actively investigating the case. 

On May 30, 2020, the City of Port Alberni is opening applications for the new and improved Enhanced Security Initiative Program (ESIP.)

This matching grant program provides successful applicants with a 50 per cent reimbursement up to a maximum of $1000.00 for security enhancements on commercial buildings or private dwellings within city limits. Examples of security enhancements include video surveillance equipment, security systems, enhanced exterior building/parking lot/lane-way lighting, and deadbolts or door locks.

The City of Port Alberni is taking a phased approach to reopening City Hall beginning Monday, June 1, 2020, to serve those that need assistance in processing their property tax and utility bill payments. The interior of the building will remain closed to the public, while a staffed payment booth in the front foyer of the building will be available (hours are limited from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday to Friday.)

While this in-person option is being made available, the City continues to strongly encourage taxpayers to use the alternate payment methods:

FOR STAYING CLOSE TO HOME OVER MAY LONG WEEKEND

Port Alberni, BC – The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) and the City of Port Alberni (CPA) have developed a joint COVID-19 Path to Recovery Plan to promote physical, social and mental well-being, guide the reopening of businesses and workspaces, restart community engagement, strengthen communication, maintain the health and safety of residents and rebuild our resilient economy.

The Port Alberni Port Authority (PAPA) is proud to announce that Independent Seafoods Canada Corporation (ISCC) will be adding a second freezer trawler, the Sunderoey, to home port dockside to the Raw Spirit at Port Alberni Terminals. Raw Spirit has made its home port in Port Alberni since 2013 and has provided over 50 direct regular local jobs to crew as well as 20 more jobs for offload activities. The Raw Spirit’s operations have also contributed to job creation for local suppliers and marine trades.

Responding to COVID-19, City Hall and its facilities are currently closed to the public, however City staff  continue to work to ensure services to Port Alberni residents continue.   During this pandemic, the City continually monitors the Province of BCs COVID-19 updates and is adhering to all Provincial directives, orders and guidelines.
