Strathcona Water Connection

The City of Port Alberni will be conducting work on the waterline near the intersection of Strathcona Street and McBride Street on Thursday, March 30, 2017 starting at 8:30 am. 

The work is being undertaken to provide a new water connection to an adjacent development.  Water supply in the area will be shut down for up to 8 hours and residents in the 5500 – 5700 block of Strathcona, 3900 block of McBride and the 3900 block of Dunsmuir will have no water until the connection is restored.

News Release - Theresa Kingston Announces Retirement

Theresa Kingston, Director of Community Services announced today that she will retire at the end of June, after 40 years of distinguished service with the City of Port Alberni.

Kingston has held various leadership positions during her tenure, serving as the head of Parks, Recreation and Heritage since 2015, following 13 years as the Manager of Human Resources and Community Development, and later as the Director of Corporate Services.

News Release - City Enters into Land Exchange Agreement to Address Derelict Property

Mayor Mike Ruttan announced that the City of Port Alberni has entered into a land exchange agreement with an uptown property owner in order to address a longstanding derelict building.

Under the land exchange agreement, the City will transfer four surplus lots on Alexander Road in exchange for the two parcels that make up the former Arrowview Hotel property on Athol Street, following the demolition of the building.  The agreement is contingent upon full environmental abatement and demolition of the building to the City’s satisfaction. 

News Release - City Announces Sale of Cherry Creek Road Property

The City of Port Alberni is pleased to announce an agreement to sell approximately 3.5 acres at the south end of Cherry Creek Road for a new commercial development.

The property, located at 4730 Cherry Creek Road, is being sold for $255,000 to LPV Land Development, a local development company owned by Mr. Leo Van Vliet.  The agreement provides for a mix of new light industrial units and a mini-storage facility, with a minimum investment of $400,000 in building investment within 18 months.

News Release – City Awarded Grant for Stamp Avenue Multi-Use Path

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced today that the City of Port Alberni was the successful recipient of a Bike BC grant to complete a multi-use path along Stamp Avenue from Roger Street to Redford Street.

The project is valued at $200,000 and with the Bike BC Grant, the City will get 50% funding from the province. Port Alberni’s contribution will come from the City’s Carbon Fund, a reserve fund established to support new greenhouse gas reduction initiatives.

News Release - City Receives Additional Funding for Wastewater Treatment

One of the largest infrastructure projects in Port Alberni’s recent history has received a further federal-provincial investment with the announcement of a $6.7 million grant from the Clean Water and Waste Water Fund.

The funding will help ensure the protection of public health and waterways by supporting the development of an upgraded wastewater treatment system, currently in the planning stages as part of the City’s Liquid Waste Management Plan (LWMP).

News Release - Rebate Program Launched for Oil to Heat Pump Upgrade

Residents of Port Alberni can now access up to $2,200 in rebates for making the switch from oil heating to an air source heat pump.

The City of Port Alberni is leveraging a provincial program funded by the B.C. Ministry of Energy and Mines’ Innovative Clean Energy Fund to help residents reduce their heating bills and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Province of BC has been providing up to a $1700 rebate through the Oil to Heat Pump Incentive Program, and a new top-up incentive from the City of Port Alberni is now providing an extra $500 to residents for making the switch.

News Release - Port Alberni Receives Financial Reporting Award for Twenty-Third Consecutive Year

For the 23rd consecutive year, the City of Port Alberni’s Finance Department has been recognized with the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). 

Mayor Mike Ruttan announced the honour at the February 27th City Council meeting, recognizing the City’s financial staff for their excellence in government accounting and financial reporting.
