Island Timberlands Access Closure - High Fire Hazard

Via Island Timberlands information bulletin:

Weather conditions are creating a high safety or environmental hazard in all areas of our land base. To ensure public safety and the protection of the forest, all areas will be closed for non-authorized access. Please respect signs and gates.

Closures will be starting today, July 11, 2017, and progressing to full closure by Friday, July 14, 2017, and will be effect until further notice.

There are several contributing factors to this action:

City hires new building and plumbing inspector

The City of Port Alberni is pleased to announce the hiring of Kevin Peters as the new building and plumbing inspector. Kevin brings a wealth of experience in municipal building inspection, having served 24 years with the City of Parksville as the chief building inspector.

Kevin’s extensive experience includes both residential and commercial building inspections and he looks forward to putting his vast knowledge to use to promote health and life-safety standards within the community.

News Release - City Seeks Community Members for Reconciliation Committee

Port Alberni, BC – Port Alberni City Council is looking for residents interested in sharing their experience, knowledge and skills to help foster reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Port Alberni.

The City is creating a select committee to investigate and report on actions for the City and community to undertake to help strengthen relations, increase cultural awareness and understanding, and support a welcoming and inclusive community. 

Special Traffic Advisory: Road Closures for Canada Day Events, July 1

The Canada Day Parade and Tri-Conic Challenge events will result in the temporary closure of Stamp Ave, 3rd Ave and Kingsway Ave on Saturday, July 1st from approximately 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Traffic control will be provided at the intersections of Roger Street and Stamp Avenue, Redford Street and Stamp Avenue, and Johnston Road and Victoria Quay.

With numerous community events and celebrations happening throughout the day, residents can expect heavier than normal traffic with some delays. The City encourages all motorists to exercise caution and patience.

Port Alberni Hires New Manager of Police Support Services

The City of Port Alberni is pleased to welcome Gaylene Thorogood as the new Manager of Police Support Services.

Gaylene has been the Detachment Services Supervisor for the Tofino RCMP for the past 5 years, and is currently managing the Ucluelet, Tofino and Ahousaht detachment offices.  Prior to this Gaylene was in the role of Detachment Services Assistant for the Ucluelet RCMP detachment.  This background has provided Gaylene with extensive experience working with and supervising RCMP civilian support staff.

Port Alberni Fire Department - Open House

The Port Alberni Fire Department is holding an open house on Saturday, June 10th between 11:00am and 1:00pm.

The firefighters will be at the hall to show off the trucks and equipment they use on a daily basis and talk about the services they provide to the community.

The City encourages everyone to stop by and meet the firefighters who protect the city.

City of Port Alberni: Cantimber Biotech Update

Earlier this month, the Alberni Valley News published an article regarding the status of the Cantimber Biotech operation and their progress with respect to recommendations from a third-party evaluation of their operations and emissions.

As noted in the article, the wood-based activated carbon manufacturer has been progressing on the 21 recommendations since the release of the report in December of 2016.
