The Port Alberni Port Authority has announced that Golder Associates have been selected to conduct an independent operations and emissions evaluation of the Cantimber Biotech facility. The review comes following public concern regarding emissions from Cantimber’s activated carbon manufacturing process.

The third-party review will consider the manufacturing process and assess the source of the emissions, the type of emissions, the potential for health impacts, and make recommendations regarding operational or emission controls to improve the conditions. 

The City of Port Alberni wishes to advise the public that the Thunder in the Valley drag race event is scheduled to be held along Stamp Avenue, August 6-7, 2016.  In order to facilitate this event a temporary closure of Stamp Avenue will begin at approximately 2:00pm on Thursday, August 4^th. Stamp Avenue will remain closed until the evening of Sunday, August 7^th, or when the City has determined that the street is safe to re-open.  

After a couple of years of planning, funding and renovating, the Alberni Aquarium and Stewardship Centre has opened its doors at Port Alberni’s Harbour Quay. This ecosystem based aquarium is designed to educate people on what is in the water around us.

After 23 years of public service, Guy Cicon has announced his retirement from the City of Port Alberni effective December 31, 2016.

As the City Engineer, Mr. Cicon has been instrumental in the design, construction and renewal of much of the community’s infrastructure, including streets, bridges, pipes, pump stations, water and sewer treatment plants, and other facilities.

Mr. Cicon will be making use of his accrued holidays in advance of his retirement date. The City of Port Alberni thanks Mr. Cicon for his dedicated service and wishes him a healthy and happy retirement.

The City is pleased to announce the award of a $50,875 BikeBC grant from the Provincial Government. The funds will support the installation of painted bike lanes along major routes within the city. This will improve safety for cyclists and drivers and enhance our growing network of cycling trails and infrastructure. The project is a key part of the City’s Active Transportation Plan and commitment to sustainability.

City of Port Alberni Appoints New Chief Administrative Officer 

City Council is pleased to announce that the City of Port Alberni has appointed a new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Timothy Pley.

Mr. Pley has been serving the City as Acting City Manager since January of 2016 and will succeed former City Manager Ken Watson.   The CAO is the sole position in the City that is recruited by and is accountable directly to City Council.

City and Firefighters Association Sign Six-Year Collective Agreement 

A new collective agreement that will take the City of Port Alberni through 2019 has been reached between the municipality and the union representing firefighter employees. 

The City would like to inform all residents and businesses that if mail delivery is interrupted or delayed by a mail strike, the business of the City continues and customers are still required to pay their City Hall bills on time.

Happening June 7-10, Exercise Coastal Response is a four day, full scale functional exercise in the Alberni Valley. It will be based on a magnitude 9.0 earthquake resulting from a rupture of the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the coast of southwestern B.C. A tsunami is generated on the west coast of Vancouver Island minutes after the initial shock.
