In response to COVID-19, the City is restricting public access to local government work spaces and public facilities until further notice.

“In light of today’s news, we are taking precautionary measures and closing City-owned facilities to the public. These closures will help minimize risk to staff so we may continue to provide essential services to the community we serve. This unprecedented step will also help protect our citizens and those considered high-risk by limiting opportunities for community-transmission,” said Tim Pley, City of Port Alberni CAO.

Further to the BC Health Officer directing cancellation of all gatherings larger than 250 people, the City of Port Alberni will be cancelling any events of 250 or more guests effective immediately, until further notice. The City encourages all event organizers renting City facilities to follow this same recommendation from the province. The Sunshine Club has made the decision to suspend all activities, programs, meetings and events effective Monday, March 16, 2020.

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) jointly with the City of Port Alberni have opened a Level One Emergency Operations Centre to support the local response to Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) and City of Port Alberni are actively developing a joint Alberni Valley Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Response Plan (the Plan) to help prepare for the potential arrival of COVID-19.

Budget eTown Hall

Port Alberni, BC – The City of Port Alberni invites residents to participate in an eTown Hall Budget Meeting on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at 7:00 p.m.

While the event takes place in Council Chambers at City Hall (4850 Argyle Street), the eTown format will allow for comments and questions to be received from those in attendance, as well as those viewing from the comfort of their home.

The City of Port Alberni is pleased to announce the hiring of Mr. Andrew McGifford as the new director of finance.

Construction on the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades (the Project) recently passed the 70 per cent completion mark with the overall projected project cost coming in at $37.9 million. This projected cost reflects a $6.3 million increase from the original 2018 estimate.

Port Alberni, BC – On January 10, 2020, the City of Port Alberni hired David Cusson as Manager of Community Policing to round out the new community safety team.

On Thursday, December 19, 2019, the City of Port Alberni awarded the position of Manager of Recreation Services in the Parks, Recreation and Heritage Department to Mr. Shawn Bourgoin.

Mr. Bourgoin comes to the City of Port Alberni with over 25 years of experience in aquatic and recreation services. Most recently, Mr. Bourgoin worked for the Town of Comox as their Recreation Supervisor, and previous to that was with the Canadian Recreation Excellence Corporation as their General Manager.
