FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Port Alberni, BC – January 22, 2026 - The City of Port Alberni is pleased to announce the purchase of the historic Post Office building located at 4835 Argyle Street. Since July 2024, the city has leased a portion of this building for its Infrastructure and Development Services departments. This strategic acquisition provides the city with an exceptional opportunity to address the growing demand for office space without the considerable costs associated with constructing a new facility.
Located directly across from City Hall, this building enhances operational efficiency by providing convenient access for administrative staff. The building spans 2806 m² (30,215 ft²) over three levels, offering ample space for the City’s current and future needs.
Chief Administrative Officer, Mike Fox, stated: "This acquisition negates the need for constructing new administrative spaces, securing the City’s spatial needs well into the future. Existing tenants, including the Salvation Army, Radio Club, and residential occupants, will remain in place, ensuring continuity and sustained community involvement. This acquisition underscores our commitment to providing efficient and effective services to our residents."
"This is an exciting step forward for our city. The acquisition of the Old Post Office demonstrates our proactive approach to accommodating growth and ensuring that our administrative services are both accessible and efficient,” said Mayor Sharie Minions. “We are committed to enhancing our community’s resources while respecting the legacy of our historic buildings. We look forward to seeing how this space will contribute to our city’s growth."
The City plans to finance the $3.4 million purchase through borrowing from the Municipal Finance Authority of BC. This acquisition represents a significant milestone in the City’s ongoing commitment to improving administrative services for the residents of Port Alberni.
