PORT ALBERNI – July 14, 2025 - The City of Port Alberni is pleased to announce that ice installation at the Alberni Valley Multiplex is complete, following the successful rental and commissioning of a temporary chiller unit.

Earlier this year, the facility’s permanent chiller system failed, resulting in the loss of ice and disruption to user groups. Since then, staff have worked diligently to secure a rental chiller from the Lower Mainland and completed a safe and timely restoration of ice-making capabilities.

“We know how important this facility is to our community, and I’m proud of the work our team has done to get us back up and running,” said Mike Fox, Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Port Alberni. “We’re looking forward to welcoming our user groups back and seeing this space full of energy and excitement once again.”

Before the newly installed chiller was commissioned it went through a series of inspections and tests to ensure it met all safety and operational standards. This included inspections and approval from Technical Safety BC, pressure testing, and verification that the system complies with provincial regulations. Only after those requirements were met could the City move ahead with the ice-making process. City crews and contractors completed the ice installation process late last week, marking the official return of the Multiplex’s operations for the 2025–26 season.

“With ice now back at the Alberni Valley Multiplex, we’re excited to welcome the West Coast Prep Camp to the facility for their 17th season,” said Mayor Sharie Minions. “We appreciate their continued confidence in our team’s ability to deliver a high-quality training environment here in the Alberni Valley. I’d also like to thank the Alberni Valley Bulldogs for their patience and professionalism as they weathered the challenges of not having home ice during their 2024-25 playoff run. We look forward to seeing them back in action at the Dawg Pound and the fans back in the stands.”
