Port Alberni, BC – The City of Port Alberni has completed the purchase of five parcels of former industrial lands, the most significant of which is the 43 acre site of the former Somass Division Sawmill.

Port Alberni, BC – The City of Port Alberni and Western Forest Products have reached a negotiated agreement for the purchase of five properties including the lands upon which the Somass Division Sawmill is situated. As a result of this sale, the City will formally withdraw the expropriation process on the Somass Lands.

The land purchase includes:

The property on which Somass Division Sawmill is situated.

A property currently used as a parking lot for Somass Division Sawmill.

Port Alberni, BC – To ensure a steady supply of safe drinking water during our hot summer, Stage 1 Water Restrictions start July 1, 2021.

Starting Thursday, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., even-numbered addresses can water their lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers on even-numbered calendar days; odd-numbered addresses can water on odd-numbered calendar days.

Port Alberni, BC – Today the City of Port Alberni served formal Notice of Expropriation to Western Forest Products for the lands upon which the Somass Division Sawmill is situated [see map below].

Port Alberni, BC – Discs will soon be flying at Dry Creek Park disc golf course! 
The City of Port Alberni is partnering with the Alberni Valley Disc Golf Club to revitalize a portion of green space along Dry Creek to develop an 18-hole disc golf course, historically used as a combination of an off-leash dog area and a walking trail.  With the development of the green space and creating a disc golf course, the City and Alberni Valley Disc Golf are looking to breathe new life into the area.

Port Alberni, BC – With the help of BC Hydro's street light replacement program, the City of Port Alberni will see the replacement of approximately 830 High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) street light bulbs with new LEDs. Starting this June, the old street light bulbs will be updated with more energy-efficient LEDs that will provide better visibility and last significantly longer.

Port Alberni, BC – Families in Port Alberni will soon have access to 88 new licensed child care spaces. The spaces are coming available in a new multi-use Child Care Centre inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to child care.

Through the Childcare BC New Spaces Fund, the Province supports the new Child Care Centre to create 15 infant/toddler spaces, 19 spaces for children aged 30 months to school age, 24 after school, and eight multi-age spaces. This project will also include 22 additional spaces funded through the Union of B.C. Municipalities.
