City of Port Alberni Postpones Official Community Plan (OCP) Engagement to Ensure Inclusive Participation

Friday, May 19, 2023

Port Alberni, BC - The City of Port Alberni announces today that it is rescheduling the next phase of the engagement process for the Official Community Plan (OCP) until fall. This decision comes as part of the City's ongoing commitment to providing a thoughtful, inclusive, and comprehensive approach to public engagement.

The City of Port Alberni recognizes that the coming season is a busy time for our First Nations neighbours and local government partners, as well as many residents, businesses, and community organizations. To ensure maximum participation and informed feedback, the City has decided to delay the OCP engagement process.

"We value the views, input, and participation of all our residents," says Director of Development Services/Deputy CAO Scott Smith. "We believe in an engagement process that is thorough, inclusive, and respects our community members' time and commitments. This is not a delay but an opportunity to ensure everyone can participate meaningfully in shaping the future of our City."

The City of Port Alberni is committed to creating an OCP that reflects the aspirations and needs of our diverse community. By delaying the next phase of the engagement process, we are making certain that every voice has the chance to be heard, every opinion valued, and every contribution considered.

The postponement allows for greater dissemination of information about the OCP, giving community members more time to familiarize themselves with the plan. This will ensure that when the next engagement phase kicks off, all participants are adequately informed and ready to contribute constructively to the discussions.

The City of Port Alberni thanks everyone for their understanding and looks forward to a productive engagement process in the near future.
