News Release - Grant Applications Invited for Storefront Improvements

For a second year, the City of Port Alberni and Community Futures Alberni-Clayoquot (CFAC) is providing a façade improvement program to assist property and business owners with revitalizing their storefronts.

Matching grants – up to a maximum of $5,000 – are available for eligible project costs for commercial buildings across the city. Corner buildings with two street-facing facades are eligible for up to $7,500 in matching grants with an additional $1,000 for buildings located in three priority areas: upper 3^rd Avenue, lower Argyle Street and lower Johnston Road. 

“Community Futures is once again thrilled to be able to partner with the City on the Façade Program,” said Lori Camire, Executive Director of CFAC. “Business owners in our community work incredibly hard and it’s a pleasure and very rewarding to be able to assist them with their façade improvements.”

Grant applications are being accepted until May 5, 2017, with all submissions being reviewed by a Project Review Committee after the deadline, not on a first-come, first-served basis. Both City and CFAC staff will be working with applicants to provide advice and assistance to ensure project eligibility.

“Well-designed and appealing storefronts are proven to increase sales and traffic,” said Pat Deakin, Economic Development Manager. “I encourage all business and property owners to take advantage of this opportunity to strengthen their business and the character and vibrancy of our community.”        

Last year’s program, also delivered in partnership with Community Futures Alberni-Clayoquot, resulted in 26 projects receiving funding and a total investment of over $600,000 in business façade improvements that are now underway.
