City Awards Largest Construction Contract in Municipal History

On September 4, 2018, Council for the City of Port Alberni unanimously passed a motion to award the main construction contract for the upcoming Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades project to Tritech Group for $17,128,429.53 plus GST - the largest construction contract awarded in the City of Port Alberni’s history.

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades project (the Project) is slated to break ground in late September/early-October 2018, and will take approximately two years to complete. When complete, the Project will:

• improve effluent quality

Harbour Quay Clock Tower Poised to Receive a Facelift

On August 13, 2018, City of Port Alberni Council will consider a motion to enter into an agreement with the Tseshaht First Nation. This agreement would see the two governments pursue a partnership in the development of a Tseshaht art piece and interpretive signage for the Harbour Quay Clock Tower.

This collaboration would recognize the historic Tseshaht winter village of Tlukwatku-is (Wolf Ritual Beach) near Harbour Quay, honour the wolf as the fundamental holder for the Tseshaht Law of Harmony and celebrate Alberni Valley’s rich local history and culture.

Advancing Reconciliation: Community Forum Summary of Input

To further Reconciliation efforts and cultivate cross-cultural awareness in Port Alberni, the Reconciliation Committee, a partnership between the Hupacasath First Nation, Tseshaht First Nation, and the City of Port Alberni, hosted a forum on March 27, 2018, to gather input on Reconciliation at the local level.  The event welcomed approximately 112 residents, local First Nations and elected officials from around the Alberni Valley.

City Hires New Deputy Director of Finance

The City of Port Alberni is pleased to announce the hiring of Ms. Rosalyn Macauley as the new Deputy Director of Finance.

Ms. Macauley comes to the City with over eight years’ experience working in the fields of finance and administration. Most recently, Ms. Macauley worked on the Asset Management implementation program for the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD). Before working with the ACRD, Ms. Macauley was the Senior Accountant with Catalyst Paper in the Port Alberni Division. 

What’s that Sound? Public and Official Perceptions of Recent Tsunami Warning and Mass Evacuation

The City of Port Alberni and the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District are working with the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) School of Community and Regional Planning to gain a better understanding of people’s experiences during the recent tsunami warning.

Starting Wednesday, April 4, 2018, two UBC researchers will be knocking on doors in Port Alberni’s inundation zone to gather data on what worked well and what difficulties were experienced during the evacuation. The information gathered will:
