The City of Port Alberni is pleased to announce the appointment of Kelly Gilday as the new Fire Chief for the Port Alberni Fire Department (PAFD). Mr. Gilday, currently Deputy Fire Chief for the City of Langley, will officially assume his new duties on November 28, 2016.
The Port Alberni Port Authority (PAPA) has confirmed that stack testing of the Cantimber Biotech facility at 300-2750 Harbour Road will take place November 7 through 10, 2016. In order for the tests to accurately measure true operating conditions Cantimber must undertake a warm-up procedure of its equipment starting November 3rd.
Work is set to commence this week in the City of Port Alberni on converting over 500 street light bulbs from high-pressure sodium (HPS) to high-efficiency light emitting diodes (LED). The project is being undertaken to reduce maintenance and energy costs and improve visibility.
A special weather statement has been issued for the Alberni Valley and surrounding region due to heavy rain and strong wind. The first in a series of powerful storms is arriving tonight. Local residents can expect heavy rainfall and strong winds starting this evening and continuing until Sunday.
Businesses and residents should prepare for high winds by securing materials that could become airborne. Residents are also encouraged to trim dead tree branches to reduce the danger of these falling onto homes and vehicles during a storm.

A partnership between the City of Port Alberni and Community Futures Alberni Clayoquot has launched with success over $600,000 in improvements planned for local storefronts.
The Façade Improvement Program is a new program designed to assist property and business owners with improving the physical appearance of their buildings and, as a result, enhance the overall aesthetics and profitability of commercial areas.
The City of Port Alberni’s $100,000 Victoria Quay Bridge Rehabilitation Project has been completed – on time and within budget.
The Victoria Quay Bridge will reopen to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians tonight, Monday, September 19. The bridge has been closed to traffic since September 6th to allow contractors to undertake necessary repairs to the bridge.
The two-week project included repairs to the bridge supporting structure, sealing cracks in the bridge deck and removal of wood debris from Roger Creek.
At the September 12th Council meeting, the Alberni Valley Community Forest presented the 2015 dividend cheque in the amount of $100,000 to the City of Port Alberni.
The Alberni Valley Community Forest (AVCF) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the City of Port Alberni, incorporated in 2009 as a forest company whose profits are returned to the community through dividends.
