Rural BC

Rural communities and regions are fundamental to the social and economic well-being of British Columbia.  Possessing abundant and varied natural assets, rural areas have made long-term and significant contributions to the provincial economy.  The cyclical nature of resource industries leaves many communities vulnerable, however, particularly those with limited economic diversity. This in turn may trigger future challenges, such as high unemployment, out migration and the loss of skilled labour, obstacles to small business retention and limited local capacity.  Recognizing the contribution of rural communities, as well as the challenges many are facing and the opportunities that exist within them, the Province of British Columbia working to make them stronger and healthier.
