Fire Hall Seismic Upgrade

The Port Alberni Fire Hall Seismic Upgrade has been completed, bringing the building up to modern standards for seismic protection.

In the event of an earthquake it is imperative that our building and equipment survive to enable us to render whatever help we can to our community. This upgrade includes reinforcing columns, walls and footings and the removal of non supporting brick walls. The removed brick walls will be replaced with wood frame construction shear walls. Our emergency station generator will be removed from the room in the base of the training tower and installed in a newly constructed concrete building. With the addition of new walls at the front of the building we are able to gain more space in the form of a new room that will house the firefighters lockers and turnout clothing. All brick walls on the apparatus floor will be covered in plywood to prevent the bricks from falling apart in an earthquake. Steel I beams are to be installed across the front and rear of the apparatus floor support columns to tie the structure together. A new supporting wall will be constructed on the apparatus floor to add support to the roof and prevent the building from swaying.
