Collections Policy

The City will formally draft and adopt a Collections Policy that outlines how cultural artefacts are acquired, documented, preserved, presented, loaned and deaccessioned. In addition, “Community Heritage Commission Bylaw 2018, Bylaw No. 4959” will be updated to include the City’s Collections Policy as part of section 8 of the bylaw, ‘Duties of the Commission’.

Heritage: McLean Mill

The Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada is the benchmark we use when preserving and displaying the artifacts at the McLean Mill National Historic Site. We will be updating our conservation and restoration plans as part of our Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan, which will help us determine future priorities on the property.

User Fees

To ensure that fees residents and guests of the Alberni Valley pay to access our parks, recreation and culture facilities and programs match our levels of service, we need to review of our fees and charges framework. This review will be complete this summer; starting September 1, 2024 facility admission and rental rates will reflect the median of the following communities: Campbell River, Courtenay, Comox, Esquimalt, Oak Bay and Powell River.

Adventure Sport Park

Community members have indicated a need for an expansion to our existing skatepark, and Community Futures Alberni Clayoquot is leading on a proposed development of a pump track and mountain bike skills/jump park. This project will be included in the Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan. Economic Development will assist in efforts to find financing for an adventure park.

Youth Strategy

The Nights Alive program has been an integral part of our programs and was unfortunately shut down due to safety concerns. Recognizing the importance of providing services and opportunities for our youth, we acknowledge that this issue requires urgent attention. While it remains a priority, we are in the process of defining a pathway forward to revitalize and reintroduce suitable services. Our goal is to create a safe and engaging environment that meets the needs of our youth and fosters their personal and social development.
