Friday, November 4, 2022

Port Alberni, BC –The City of Port Alberni and the Port Alberni Professional Fire Fighters Association (PAPFFA) Local 1667, have reached a new five-year collective agreement, retroactive to January 1, 2020.

The agreement was ratified by the union on Friday, October 28, 2022, and by City of Port Alberni Council on Monday, October 31, 2022. The new contract covers a five-year period and will expire on December 31, 2024.

“The dedicated firefighters in the City of Port Alberni provide critical support to the entire community, with a high level of professionalism,” stated Mayor Sharie Minions. “This agreement is essential to the continued well-being and stability of our community and we are pleased it has been ratified.”

The PAPFFA represents approximately 10 per cent of City of Port Alberni staff. The new agreement aligns with the provisions set out in the previous contract, which expired at the end of December 2019. It provides general salary increases of 2.5 per cent, in each of 2020 and 2021, with salary increases in subsequent years tied to an average of comparator communities across BC. The agreement also includes improvements to benefits and other working conditions, and amendments to collective agreement language that clarify working conditions.

"Our agreement with the City of Port Alberni provides assurance and stability to our working conditions for the years to come,” stated Travis Cross, President, PAPFFA. “Our members are proud and committed to continue providing a service of excellence in order to keep our community safe.”
