A special weather statement has been issued for the Alberni Valley and surrounding region due to heavy rain and strong wind. The first in a series of powerful storms is arriving tonight. Local residents can expect heavy rainfall and strong winds starting this evening and continuing until Sunday.

Businesses and residents should prepare for high winds by securing materials that could become airborne. Residents are also encouraged to trim dead tree branches to reduce the danger of these falling onto homes and vehicles during a storm.

The Port Alberni Port Authority (PAPA) has announced that they are hosting a public Open House to discuss progress to date on the Independent Review of Cantimber Biotech and the planned testing of the operations by Golder Associates. The event is scheduled for:

The City of Port Alberni advises motorists that crews will be performing routine maintenance on the Gertrude Street Bridge at Roger Creek starting September 26, 2016 and continuing until approximately October 5.

During this time, temporary single lane closures will be in place with flaggers and traffic signage.  The public is advised to expect minor delays, travel cautiously, observe all lane closures, and use alternate routes if possible.

A partnership between the City of Port Alberni and Community Futures Alberni Clayoquot has launched with success over $600,000 in improvements planned for local storefronts.  

The Façade Improvement Program is a new program designed to assist property and business owners with improving the physical appearance of their buildings and, as a result, enhance the overall aesthetics and profitability of commercial areas.

The City of Port Alberni’s $100,000 Victoria Quay Bridge Rehabilitation Project has been completed – on time and within budget.

The Victoria Quay Bridge will reopen to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians tonight, Monday, September 19. The bridge has been closed to traffic since September 6th to allow contractors to undertake necessary repairs to the bridge.

The two-week project included repairs to the bridge supporting structure, sealing cracks in the bridge deck and removal of wood debris from Roger Creek.

At the September 12th Council meeting, the Alberni Valley Community Forest presented the 2015 dividend cheque in the amount of $100,000 to the City of Port Alberni.  

The Alberni Valley Community Forest (AVCF) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the City of Port Alberni, incorporated in 2009 as a forest company whose profits are returned to the community through dividends.

The City of Port Alberni is closing the Victoria Quay Bridge over Roger Creek beginning Tuesday, September 6th and continuing for two weeks while repairs are undertaken.  

The rehabilitation project consists of repairs to the bridge supporting structure as well as sealing cracks in the bridge deck. In order to carry out the repairs the bridge will be closed to all vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists during the project, with traffic being detoured along Gertrude Street.

The Port Alberni Port Authority has announced that Golder Associates have been selected to conduct an independent operations and emissions evaluation of the Cantimber Biotech facility. The review comes following public concern regarding emissions from Cantimber’s activated carbon manufacturing process.

The third-party review will consider the manufacturing process and assess the source of the emissions, the type of emissions, the potential for health impacts, and make recommendations regarding operational or emission controls to improve the conditions.

The City of Port Alberni wishes to advise the public that the Thunder in the Valley drag race event is scheduled to be held along Stamp Avenue, August 6-7, 2016.  In order to facilitate this event a temporary closure of Stamp Avenue will begin at approximately 2:00pm on Thursday, August 4th. Stamp Avenue will remain closed until the evening of Sunday, August 7th, or when the City has determined that the street is safe to re-open.
