City of Port Alberni Council Adopts 2023-2027 Financial Plan

Port Alberni, BC – The City of Port Alberni Mayor and Council adopted the 2023-2027 Financial Plan and approved three readings of the 2023 Tax Rates Bylaw, at the City Council meeting on April 25, 2023.

The 2023-2027 Financial Plan, which is updated annually, was presented to the newly elected Council for review and feedback over a three-month period starting in February, and underwent thoughtful deliberation involving the public and City staff. 

“Thanks to all who shared their feedback during the budget discussions and E-Town Hall meeting – your input is critical to ensuring the voice of the community is reflected in this important decision-making process,” said Mayor Sharie Minions. “We look forward to seeing continued investments in priority areas like growing Port Alberni’s economy and building a sustainable and vibrant waterfront community.”

The City’s 2023-2027 Financial Plan includes budgeted revenues and expenses to deliver day-to-day services to the community, implement strategic initiatives, invest in infrastructure, and enable long-term funding strategies for future infrastructure requirements.

Director of Finance, Andrew McGifford reported that the proposed tax rate for 2023 would be an increase of 7.26%, which equates to an increase of $156.74 on the average single-family residential property (valued at $530,609) for City services taxation. Adoption of the Tax Rates Bylaw is scheduled for May 8th.

 “We understand that these financial decisions greatly impact the lives of our citizens and City staff and Council worked hard to minimize the tax increase,” said Minions, “It is a delicate balance to prioritize community improvements, continue current levels of service and keep tax impacts low – all through times of growing inflation.”
