57th Annual Totem Basketball Tournament - January 6 & 7, 2012

The Totem Tournament is the longest running boys basketball tournament in BC, although now the tournament hosts both boy and girl teams.

Six teams will bring approximately 90 players plus coaches and family members into the community for the weekend.  The economic spin off from the tournament is a great boost to local businesses, in particular hotels, restaurants and some retail shops.  The tournament is also an opportunity for the community to demonstrate its renowned 'Excellence in Hosting.'

Alberni Inlet Trail opens

A focus on the creation of new trails and the linking of existing trails is one of the strategic initiatives of the City of Port Alberni's Economic Development office.  This initiative received a boost when Phase 1 of the Historic CNPR Alberni Inlet Trail opened Sunday September 17, 2011. 

Raven Underground Coal Mine Project - Public Comments Invited and Public Meetings

The BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEA Agency) have released the Raven Project's draft Application Information Requirements/Environmental Impact Statement (AIR/EIS) document and announced the dates for the 40-day public comment period.

The public will have from May 18 to June 27, 2011 to review and comment on the AIR/EIS document. An electronic version of the document is available at www.ceaa-acee.gc.ca or www.eao.gov.bc.ca. Copies are also available at libraries throughout the Comox Valley and Port Alberni area.
