The City of Port Alberni has applied to the West Coast Community Adjustment Program Fund for $250,000 for an extension of the existing waterfront boardwalk and the construction of a water-level multi-purpose activity float at Harbour Quay. The total cost of the waterfront boardwalk and float is $506,835. This project is part of a plan to invest more than $2 million in Harbour Quay upgrades in 2009.
The water-level, multi-purpose float would allow residents and tourists a place to walk and take photos from, kayakers and windsurfers a place to launch, sports-fishers a place to cast from, and boaters a place to tie up while eating, shopping or doing business with Harbour Quay merchants and companies.
The West Coast Community Adjustment Program is a Fisheries Legacy fund and is veted at the local level by the Community Futures Alberni-Clayoquot office. $250,000 is the maximum allowable funding for any project and must not represent more than 60% of project costs. Funding decisions are made by a small committee of federal and provincial representatives.
