Solid Waste Collection

The City operates both residential and commercial solid waste collection services including a commercial dumpster type collection service. Solid waste is taken to the Alberni Valley Landfill operated by the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District. The City's recycling program is provided by the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District.

City crews collect about 6600 tonnes per year of solid waste from both residential and commercial customers.

Residential Service

The City began automated garbage collection on December 5th, 2011.  For complete details, please click on the Automated Garbage Collection link on the menu on the left of this screen.

Crews begin collection at 7:00 a.m. so cans should be placed out before this time to ensure collection.  To avoid attracting animals, please do not put your garbage out until pick-up day. 

The following maps were done when pick up was bi-weekly.  They will be updated in the next few weeks.  Unless you have been individually notified, your pick up day will remain the same as shown on these maps.  To find out your scheduled pick-up day, please click on the link to the map below showing the City's residential garbage routes.  (This is a large file.  Please be patient while it loads.)  Then see the corresponding Week 1 or Week 2 schedule.

Recycling Services

The City's recycling program is provided by the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District. Curbside collection is provided throughout the city to residential properties. A central depot is located at 4th and Napier.

Commercial Collection

The City offers solid waste collection to commercial customers in two formats; commercial "loose" services and commercial dumpster services.

Commercial "loose" service is similar to residential pick up. It is provided weekly to businesses in the City.  For information on the cost of this service please contact the Accounting Clerk (Utilities) at 250-720-2841.  Additional cans may be set out if extra collection stickers are purchased and affixed. These may be purchased at City Hall or Echo Centre at a cost of $2.00 each.

Commercial Dumpster Service is also available. Rates are based on the size of the dumpster and the frequency of pickup.
