2011 Local Government Election
Welcome to the City of Port Alberni, Local Government Election site!
This site will provide you with information and links for the upcoming local government election.
Local Government Elections are held every three years on the third Saturday of November in accordance with the Local Government Act and Port Alberni's Election Bylaws #4589, 4700 & 4776 (consolidated for convenience).
The next local government election will take place on:

On Election Day, the citizens of Port Alberni will elect one (1) candidate for the position of Mayor and six (6) candidates for the position of Councillor. Six candidates were nominated for School Trustee posions and were all acclaimed. This webpage contains information on the following election topics:

NOMINATION PROCESS
Nomination packages will be available at Port Alberni City Hall starting Friday, August 26th 2011.
The nomination period begins at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4th, 2011 and ends on Friday, October 14th, 2011 at 4:00 p.m.
Those persons unable to deliver nominations in person may mail or fax them to the attention of the Chief Election Officer by the October 14th, 2011 deadline (Fax 250-723-1003). If sent by facsimile, the original must be received by October 21st, 2011 at 4:00 p.m.

Assistance with Voting and Curbside Voting
If a voter has difficulty reading or writing English, they may bring a translator to assist them in the voting process. The translator must complete a solemn declaration of assistance in order to provide translation assistance.
If you are unable to enter the voting place, you may ask to receive and mark your ballot at a place located outside the voting place (curbside voting). It will be necessary for you to bring someone with you who can advise the election officials that you need help outside the voting place.
If you require help with voting, you may ask the Presiding Election Official (PEO) in charge at the voting place to assist you. You may also bring someone with you to the voting place to help you vote. This person must make a solemn declaration to preserve the secrecy of your ballot, to mark the ballot according to your wishes and to not attempt to influence how you vote.
ARE YOU ELIGIBLE TO VOTE?
There are two categories of electors for local government elections in the Province of British Columbia: Resident Electors and Non-Resident Property Electors.
You are qualified to register as a Resident Elector in the City of Port Alberni if you meet the following criteria:
You are qualified to register as a Non-Resident Property Elector in the City of Port Alberni if you meet the following criteria:
Non-Resident Property Electors will be required to fill out an Application to Register by providing proof of ownership of the property (title certificate or current title search); 2 pieces of identification confirming your identity (one of which must contain your signature); and a non-resident property elector consent form of a majority of the registered owners, if there is more than one owner.
Non-Resident Property Electors are encouraged to fill out the application and produce the required documentation for the above application at Port Alberni City Hall, 4850 Argyle Street, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. prior to Friday, November 18, 2011.
NOTE: In accordance with the Local Government Act, the only persons who are registered owners, either as joint tenants or tenants-in-common, are individuals who are not holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust.
ARE YOU REGISTERED TO VOTE?
The City of Port Alberni will be using the most recent Provincial list of voters as our list of registered resident voters which means that if you are registered to vote in the next Provincial election your name will automatically appear on the City of Port Alberni's list.
If your name does not appear on this list you will still be able to register to vote at your voting place on November 19, 2011.
HOW TO REGISTER TO VOTE ON ELECTION DAY
Any person who is eligible to vote and is not registered may register at the designated voting place where they live or own property. When you attend your voting place on Election Day, Saturday, November 19, 2011 to register and vote, remember to bring at least two (2) documents that provide evidence of your identity (Driver's Licence, BC Identification Card, Social Insurance Card, Passport, BC Carecard, Birth Certificate, Citizenship Card, Credit Card) and for residents of Port Alberni, evidence of your current place of residence (telephone bill, hydro bill, property tax notice, personalized cheque). One of these documents must contain a signature. If you are unable to provide evidence of your current place of residence you will need to make a solemn declaration as to your place of residence before being permitted to register. Non-Resident property owners must provide proof of ownership of the property in the form of a Certificate of Title.
