Business Licencing and Bylaw Enforcement

City Council sets standards and regulations for a variety of aspects within the City. These are done through the adoption of Bylaws. Bylaws spell out what activities may or may not be allowed and will set penalties for non compliance which may be enforced through the courts or the issuance of violation tickets. It is possible for a citizen to initiate their own civil action to enforce a City Bylaw.

The City's Bylaw Enforcement Officer, the RCMP and various other designated municipal employees and qualified individuals will enforce the City’s bylaws. For the most part, action is taken by the City on the basis of a complaint. All complaints are kept in confidence, but your name and contact number is required. The City will not respond to anonymous calls. If you are concerned about a situation, please contact the Bylaw Enforcement Officer (720-2831). He will help clarify whether there are City regulations being contravened, at which time you may inform him if you wish for the City to take action. The City strives for voluntary compliance and will work with the complainant and potential offender for an expeditious resolution of the matter.

The Business Licencing Bylaw regulates the operation of businesses within the City.  With the exception of Government and Crown Corporations, all businesses located or operating in the City are required to have a business licence.  The Bylaw Enforcement Officer/ Business Licence Inspector issues business licences and inspects for compliance.
