1. Canadian Award for Financial Reporting
The Mayor presented the Director of Finance the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for year ended 2004.
2. Canadian Cancer Society, Relay for Life
Kristi Dobson, local Coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society, Relay for Life, was in attendance to provide information about this years’ event to be held June 23, 2006 at Bob Dailey Stadium .
3. Travis Cross and Tom McEvay
Travis Cross and Tom McEvay discussed Mr. Cross’ plans to compete in the 2008 Olympics. They hope to attract competing wrestlers to train in the Alberni Valley and are asking for the community’s support.

That the letter dated March 16, 2006 attaching information about a Youth Suicide Prevention Walk, requesting the Mayor and Council to invite the citizens of Port Alberni to financially support the Walk by making a public proclamation, asking if the Mayor will go live on "The Peak, 93.3 FM" Radio requesting public support and issue a press release to support this cause, be received and Council assist by promoting the event.

That the letter dated March 17, 2006 advising that they are reaching out to communities on Vancouver Island through a "Voices of Discovery Tour 2006" to bring news about cancer research, be received and Council endorse the Tour in Port Alberni in the following ways:

attend the Port Alberni "community presentation" on May 18th.

6. School District 70 Numeracy Network

That the letter dated March 8, 2006 advising that they are planning a Math Fair on Friday, March 31, 2006 at the Alberni Mall from 6:00pm to 8:00pm to promote mathematical awareness in the community be received, and Councillor Solda be appointed as a representative from City Council to volunteer at the Math Fair to be part of the panel that will be asking questions of students about how they use mathematics in their every day lives.

That the Letter dated March 13, 2006 advising of the Seniors' Advocacy Steering Committee formed to discuss concerns about the state of advocacy services for seniors, be received and Council endorse the concept of regional Seniors' Advocacy Offices by:
passing a motion of support in principle for Seniors' Advocacy Offices in municipalities across the province;
forwarding their expression of support of this resolution to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Convention in the Fall of 2006;
requesting the UBCM to obtain the provincial government's support for this initiative; and
forwarding their resolution to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) to obtain the federation government's support for this BC initiative.
