MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF COUNCIL HELD

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2005 AT 7:00 PM IN THE CITY HALL COUNCIL CHAMBERS

The Mayor presented Fire Chief Larry McGifford with the Fire Services Exemplary Service Bar recognizing 30 years of service with the Port Alberni Fire Department.

 

A.        APPROVAL OF AGENDA

C.        DELEGATIONS

 

1.         Alberni Happy Hatters

 

Members of the Alberni Happy Hatters were in attendance as "Red Hatters" accompanied by musicians and a speaker.  They sang songs, provided an introduction to the group and read poetry for Council.

 

2.         Labour Council

 

Mike Kuruliak and Dave Thompson were in attendance to discuss child labour and changes to employment standards in BC which, in their opinion, are the worst in North America.  They asked Council to declare the City as a child labour free zone.

 

Council requested copies of the legislation before considering this matter further.

 

3.         Port Alberni Women's Resources Society

 

Anne Graboski was in attendance to update Council on the Society's work in the community.  She provided information about a community-wide, free conference on February 24 and 25, 2005 to address the concern that some children may be victims of sexual exploitation.  She requested a letter of support from the City and invited Council and any interested staff to attend the conference, where a Community Action Team will be formed.

That Council for the City of Port Alberni write a letter of support for the Port Alberni Women's Resources Society's proposal for provincial funding for a community action team to address sexual exploitation of children and youth, that Council attempt to attend the conference and that Councillor Solda be designated the City liaison on the action team.

Inspector Rick Taylor introduced Constable Jean Bouchard who provided information to Council regarding drug production and use in the City.

That the memo from the Fire Chief dated February 8, 2005 be receiving and Council for the City of Port Alberni endorses the application to the Province of BC for a $20,000 Tsunami Preparedness Grant for the purpose of upgrading radio frequency of the City’s current tsunami warning system, the installation of universal signage and the preparation of public information and training.

            That Council for the City of Port Alberni receive the report from the City Clerk dated January 10, 2005 and endorse and submit to the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities the resolution regarding the relocation of the hydro substation from the tsunami inundation zone and the resolution regarding the Care Home Funding Formula.
